Batteries And Folding Electric Mobility Scooters

Batteries are important when it comes to owning a mobility scooter. If your batteries aren't working properly then you won't be going anywhere.

Folding electric mobility scooters have lighter batteries than their studier normal counterparts to keep down the overall weight of the scooter. If you need to replace them at anytime make sure you get not only the right capacity (e.g. 12 volts) but also the right size as they come in various widths and lengths.

By treat your batteries properly you'll get the most out of them for many years.

The most important thing is charging. The worst thing you can do to a battery is let it go completely flat. This can happen if you don't recharge it regularly or if you haven’t used your electric mobility scooter for a while. Letting your battery go dead is the quickest way to shortening its lifespan.

The best way to avoid this problem is to put the battery on charge every time you use your scooter even if it was only for a short journey. It's easiest if you do this overnight. If you've used your vehicle a lot that day it could take over 8 hours to properly charge the battery up again.

Once plugged into the battery charger it will charge itself until it reaches full capacity and then it will change to trickle mode where just a tiny amount of electricity is used just to keep the battery fully charged up.

If you know you're not going to be using your mobility scooter for a few days, charge it fully and then disconnect the battery from the scooter so it will drain very slowly. Then recharge it again just before you take your scooter out.

Other Tips

When storing your scooter don't have the battery too near somewhere hot like a radiator as if will reduce its lifespan.

Batteries don't like getting wet so if you've got caught out in a downpour give the batteries and surrounding area a quick wipe over to remove excess moisture.

It's good to occasionally check the battery terminals to ensure they are greased. The grease protects the terminals for the outside elements that can cause them to degrade and become less efficient. You can get spray on grease for batteries from shops like Halfords. Remember it only needs a little amount of spray to do the job.

All in all folding electric mobility scooters need little maintenance but by treating your battery well you will ensure you get the best out of your machine.
