Why Choose A Folding Mobility Scooter?
A standard mobility scooter is ideal for those of us who love to be independent but are having problems with walking. They are great for getting around your immediate neighbourhood but aren't much good if you want to travel much further a field.
If you like to go on holiday or go and visit friends and family who live some distance away from you then you'll find it difficult to transport your standard scooter unless you have a van and a strong man on hand to help lift it in. In these situations having a folding mobility scooter is the perfect solution.
Actually, despite the name, there's very little folding involved. Most of these scooters break down into smaller pieces so that you fit them into the boot of a car. Being in smaller bits also means that the individual pieces aren't too heavy to pick up and put in the car. With a bit of practise it should only take a couple of minutes to take a scooter apart and put it in your vehicle.
Folding mobility scooters also have another advantage over standard scooters - they are not so bulky. They take up less space if you're storing your scooter in your hallway as many people have to, even if you haven't taken it apart. And if you're having a bad walking day, a folding scooter can be used indoors with much greater ease, getting through doorways much more easily and negotiating tight corners better as well.
However a folding mobility scooter is not suitable for everyone's needs. Being of a smaller and lighter design they are not quite as robust as a standard scooter. They are not built to withstand rough terrain. An occasional outing down a country lane will be no problem but if you want to make regularly trips "off road" or on particularly rough pavements then a folding scooter may struggle and a standard design would be more suitable.
Another point is they are not designed to go long distances. To increase the portability they have smaller batteries. Small batteries mean smaller distances. Folding mobility scooters are more for pottering around your neighbourhood and about town rather than robust 10 miles trips to see a friend.
If you like having days out then a folding mobility scooter is exactly what you need. You can get in your car, drive to your destination, quickly reassemble it and be off enjoying yourself without having slow down your friends or family by being forced to use a walking frame or have to spend the day being pushed about in a wheelchair. Next time a friend says "Let's have a day at the seaside", you won't have to say no because you think you'll be a bit of a burden. Just take apart your scooter and off you go.
